Any Telecommunication system whether for voice only , voice and data , or integrated video voice and data has to content with optimal management of , Customer Premises Equipment , Transmission and Transport Networks, Switching networks and of course content management.
An hitherto free resource ” spectrum ” has assumed importance beyond sanity with learned captains of industry throwing themselves bare and competing insanely at auctions giving more than a hint of how little is understood and the myopia that affects the telecom industry.
Whatever be the generation of technology , wireless compression techniques and line of sight limitations necessitate expansion of OFC networks , a night mare in the context of urban municipal laws and topologies.
I guess a better approach to understanding this rather interesting arena is to turn the issue on its head and start with content and then worry about delivery systems best suited eg the CATV system network both in terms of technology as well as distribution ….a real threat to the very existence of telcos given the smooth and seamless transition to IP Netwoks
